Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my data?

Two ways, both manual. Export a file: Settings → Export → CSV or XLSX → choose where it goes via the system share sheet (Files, iCloud Drive, email, AirDrop). Or back up to iCloud: Settings → iCloud → Back Up Now — Penno saves a backup file in your own iCloud account that you can restore later.

How do I restore from a backup?

Two options. From a file you exported: Settings → Import CSV. From an iCloud backup: Settings → iCloud → Restore. Either way it's a manual step, and restoring is destructive — it replaces your current data — so export first if you want to keep it.

Will my data sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Not on its own. Penno is local-first with no Penno cloud, so it doesn’t sync continuously between devices. What you can do is back up to your own iCloud (Settings → iCloud → Back Up Now) and then restore that backup on another device or after reinstalling — both are manual steps, through your own iCloud, never a Penno server. Export → AirDrop → Import works too.

Can I connect Penno to my bank?

No. Penno does not support bank linking — by design. The app contains no bank-aggregation SDK (no Plaid, no MX, no Yodlee). All transactions are entered manually. This is the central trade-off of the app: a private, offline tracker requires manual input.

Is there a Pro tier or subscription?

There is no subscription, ever. Penno is free to download with one optional one-time $19.99 "Penno Pro" unlock — pay once, no recurring fees. The free tier is fully usable; the unlock just removes the Reports history limit (the free tier shows the current month plus the two preceding months).

How do recurring (subscription) entries work?

Add a recurring entry with a name, amount, category, and billing day (1-31). Every time you open the app, Penno checks for any recurring whose next billing date has passed — those automatically get logged as transactions. If you allow notifications, you also get a day-before reminder for each upcoming charge.

How do debt reminders work?

Three kinds. If a debt has a due date, you get a reminder N days before. If a debt has a monthly payment day, you get a reminder on that day each month. If neither is set and the debt has been untouched for a while, Penno sends a quiet "you haven't moved this debt in a while" nudge — useful for the IOU you forgot your sister owes you.

Why are some categories pre-filled in English even when my app is in Turkish/German/etc.?

Penno's default categories (Food, Transport, Bills, etc.) are stored with English names in the database, then translated at display time. This keeps the data portable — if you export a CSV in Turkish and re-import it after switching to German, the default categories still match. Categories you create are stored exactly as you typed them and are not translated.

What happens if I delete the app?

Your data is gone with the app. There is no server-side copy. Before deleting, export your data via Settings → Export so you have a backup file somewhere of your choosing.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. iOS shipped first. Android is on the roadmap — no committed date.

How do I request a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple, not the developer. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and request a refund there. We don't have control over Apple's decision, but most reasonable requests are approved.
